Nervous System 101

Embodiment Coaching is a practice that focuses on exploring bodily tension, gestures, and sensations through awareness, dialogue, movement, and touch. This can include yoga postures, breathwork, somatic-based movement, and techniques. It also involves learning and implementing exercises that stimulate the vagus nerve. By listening to the messages carried in the body, clients are guided to make choices that support moving with more ease and freedom in life, which may have been lost or disconnected in their life story.

Somatic Trauma Therapy employs a combination of psychotherapeutic and somatic body-oriented techniques to assist individuals who have undergone various forms of trauma, such as childhood trauma, single-event trauma, repeated trauma, vicarious trauma, generational trauma or severe/chronic illness. These traumatic experiences may include overwhelming events like car accidents, violent attacks, or significant losses, as well as smaller traumas like traumatic stress and other overwhelming life events. Trauma can also include seemingly insignificant experiences such as relational issues, illness, or an array of events or experiences that stretch back to childhood, such as neglect, abuse, or poor relationships with early attachment figures.

2 | Survival States in Daily Life

Somatic Psychotherapy is a body-centred form of therapy that utilises both psychotherapy and physical therapies. In addition to talk therapy, somatic therapy practitioners use mind-body exercises and other physical techniques to help release pent-up tension, such as stored survival stress, which can negatively impact a patient’s physical and emotional well-being.

3 | Trauma & The Nervous System

Somatic Trauma Therapy aims to guide the client through thwarted fight or flight responses and release the biophysical survival energies, which are locked into terrifying patterns of fear, anxiety, anger, shutdown and PTSD. Through a unified approach, we can assist individuals in integrating an understanding of their experiences, transgenerational trauma, and systemic forces of oppression.

Even the best advice, self-help books and therapy can’t be embodied.

This isn’t a failure; it’s physiology. And it’s the missing piece to real, long-term change and deep healing. If we do not consequently have the opportunity to process and release the experiences of our past throughout the body-mind system, we may remain stuck in a state of physiological and psycho-emotional disequilibrium. Often, this manifests as hyper- or hypo-arousal, disconnection, tension or rigidity in the body.

I help and coach you through learning and implementing the art of somatic movement, regulation, and embodiment, learning to be in your body, your activations and triggers, and implementing vagus nerve and somatic resources to widen and expand your window of tolerance.

This process requires patience, learning, and developing introspection. I help you develop these skills to maximise your personal and potentially therapeutic journey.

Finding a Somatic specialist to guide you through the process of reconnecting back to your body can be overwhelming. In our first session, we will explore your goals, history and levels of dysregulation to create an integrative plan specific to your story. We work together to create a safe and stable internal environment to reconnect with your body and bring you to a place where you can look forward to the future.

This 90-minute session can be done online or in person in Bingley, West Yorkshire, UK.
